Buying Your Own Island

By your own island does sound like a unique idea but before you run off and procured down payment down there are some things you might consider.

Purchasing your own island is similar to that of purchasing your own house after all it is really owned land.

You must have a price in mind that you want to pay for your piece of paradise of course the bigger your budget the better your island will be. It is actually better to pay a little more foreign island then look for a cut rate budget price is normally the cheaper the island no more problems it has.

Probably the most important thing to consider when buying your own island is location. You should look for in island that has some kind of population on it, a ready water supply, and one that would be sheltered from storms.

You also want to select an island with a good climate ideally one with tropical climates are preferred. You also want to check the accessibility of getting on the island this is very important.

This is part one of a two-part series on purchasing your own private island tomorrow we will discuss many more important factors.

The city of Manila the Philippines

When flying to the Philippines I have heard horror stories about the main airport in Manila. From my experience I found these to be untrue. From my touchdown in the Philippines through baggage and customs I think it took me 15 min. I found the people to be very friendly and helpful something you don't find in many airports in the United States.

If you are staying in Manila for a few days before traveling on through the many islands of the Philippines which are approximately 7001 there are some very good hotels especially near the American Embassy they could run approximately 40 or $50 a night. This is a good area is close to the nightlife and many restaurants.

From your hotel you might want to take a short taxi ride to the Mall of Asia I think this is rated as one of the largest malls Asia. This mall as a variety of stores including many found in the United States such as the Gap, Victoria's Secret and many more name brands. It is a very large mall that you can spend hours in with many small unique restaurants and shops. For a very pleasant traveling experience be sure to include the Mall of Asia in your travel plans when visiting Manila in the Philippines.

Nassau the Bahamas

I have just recently visited Nassau the capital of the Bahamas. I arrived there on a cruise ship and found the harbor area very friendly and secure.

When you enter the arrival terminal there is a free Wi-Fi zone located in the middle in a small gazebo. I think the Wi-Fi zone extended out quite a ways because I saw many passengers from the cruise ships on their computers throughout the terminal. There were many small shops offering such items as hats, T-shirts, straw baskets all your typical tourist type items.

If you want to explore the island there is no shortage of transportation as you may rent a scooter or hire a taxi right at the port. I took a taxi to the hotel Atlantis the fair was four dollars a person when returning to the port I took the ferry which was only three dollars per person. I enjoyed the marketplaces and beaches and found the people very friendly. So if you get a chance to visit Nassau don't pass it up you will be pleasantly surprised.

Family Fraud

When traveling through the islands you must always be aware of your surroundings and protect your personal information. Although you are in paradise there are still ripoff artist looking to make a profit.

When leaving on your island vacation make sure you inform your relatives as to where you are going and that you have adequate funds to make the trip as most of it will be prepaid anyway. The reason for this is what we call the grandparent or family fraud.

The person committing the fraud will contact your grandparents or someone in your family and will impersonate a doctor and lawyer are somebody in authority telling them you have met with a misfortune such as an accident or sickness. They will insist that they need emergency funds to remedy the situation and money must be wired immediately.

To prevent this scam always leave a number either your cell or hotel where you can be reached in case of emergency inform your relatives to contact you in case of an emergency. In casual conversation never give out family details or information that can be used to contact your family. Inform your family never to wire any funds anywhere unless they hear directly from you. While traveling through the islands it is a paradise but there also many sharks out there of the humankind.

The Isle

On a recent visit to the Mississippi Gulf Coast I stay at the Isle hotel and casino. Upon check-in was shown to my room on the fifth floor. After about 5 min. in the room I realized I could not stay there as the air conditioner units on the first floor were so loud you could hear them even with the balcony door shut. Returning to the desk I was assigned another room on the sixth floor the problem with this was I was still only one floor above the air conditioner units so I had the same problem. My third visit to the desk was much more productive as I was assigned another room on the opposite side of the air-conditioner units. I do not blame the staff or the hotel for this problem because I requested a Gulf side view and they were just trying to accommodate me. My third room was very nice on the seventh floor facing the bay which had a great view. The staff was very patient and cordial and went out of their way to make sure I was a satisfied customer.

The hotel and casino was laid out very nice. There is Wi-Fi in every room and in the entire hotel which makes it very convenient for the business traveler and tourist who need to use their computer. The hotel has a very nice buffet reasonably priced they also have smaller restaurants serving pizza and burgers on the first floor. On certain days of the week seniors can get a two for one deal at the buffet. If you happen to be there on your birthday you will have a free buffet. The hotel has a lot of nice touches and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good deal at a reasonable price. So when traveling in the Gulf Coast area have your travel agent or use their website and book a great room at the Isle.

The Beau Rivage

I recently spent three delightful days in the Beau Rivage resort and casino . This resort casino is located in Biloxi Mississippi on the Gulf Coast. When viewing Biloxi from the air you can really see that it is an island. Surrounded by water on the Back Bay and by the Bay of Biloxi on the other side.

When checking in I was given a choice to stay on the lower floors or the higher ones I chose the higher ones. I stayed on the 23rd floor of the hotel which had a magnificent view of the city, the Back Bay and also of some of the surrounding towns such as Ocean springs which in itself is a great little town to visit with it shops and many restaurants.

I was quite pleased with the room at the hotel as it was very large including the bathroom with its double sink separate tub and shower. The service was excellent. The only drawback I found was the hotel did not have Wi-Fi in the rooms. You could get an Internet connection with a ethernet cord that the hotel supplied at no charge. The only Wi-Fi spot was in the coffee shop in the main lobby. The buffets were fantastic and reasonably priced. When checking in we received a players card which entitled us to $30 of free slot machine play which was a nice touch. You may use valet parking or self parking. If you do choose self parking you will have a little ways to walk from the garage through the main lobby to the elevators going into your room. All in all we really enjoyed our stay there and would recommend the Beau Rivage resort and casino to everyone. If you go to their website you will find some great package deals like we did.

Cuisine in the Phillippines

The cuisine in the Philippines is influenced by Japan, China, Spanish and American. The main staple of the Filipino diet is rice. In the Philippines the majority of people boiled, steamed or roasted their food. They used many spices from all the islands. Rice is served with every meal and even used as a snack.

Vacation Ripoffs

Vacation ripoffs can easily happen to anyone. An example of this while doing your research online you find the perfect hotel at a reasonable price. The photos on the website look great so you book it.

Upon arriving at your hotel you find that nothing matches what was on their website. The hotel looks rundown and in need of maintenance including the parking lot which is full of potholes. This is very frustrating to say the least I know because it happened to me.

This is the way I handle the situation I went to the front desk told them their website was very deceiving and canceled my reservation immediately. They charge me a $15 administration fee. After discussing with my credit card company this situation they remove the fee. This can easily happen to you but don't lose your cool just walk away these type of people won't be in business very long.

Credit Card Suprise

After enjoying your exotic vacation on your dream island in the Caribbean or the South China Sea you have returned home and are reviewing your expenses. This is the time that you discover " the credit card surprise."

While reviewing your credit card statement you noticed several surcharges for purchases while you are abroad. This is just another way a credit card company that rips you off. They have added a 2% fee for foreign transactions. This is a fee that is charged to you for doing absolutely nothing. One way to combat these fees is use your debit card whenever possible your exchange rate will probably be better and the fees are much smaller. You might also want to take a certain amount of cash with you on your vacation. When carrying cash just be sure to be aware of your surroundings and safeguard your belongings at all times. If your credit card fees seem to be extremely high and their are a lot of add on fees you might want to consider canceling this card and obtain a better one.

Beach Property

If you are looking for beachfront property as an investment or simply to build a vacation getaway you are fortunate as this is a buyers market. In Florida and California property values have dropped drastically and there are some real bargains.

The first step in obtaining beach property is ask yourself do I want this as an investment, for use it as my primary residence or as a vacation home to enjoy my golden years. This will help you to determine what type of beachfront property you will require.

If you do not have a preference as to what state you would like to live in Florida will probably have your best investment properties. Florida has no state tax and property taxes have just been cut by the new governor this is definitely an advantage for you.

I have discovered an interesting investment in beach property in Daytona Beach Florida. They have what is called a condo hotel. This is simply a hotel located on the beach that has an abundance of rooms. You may purchase one of these small efficiency at a reasonable price. I found some as low as $35,000. The idea behind this you may use it at your convenience as a vacation getaway and the rest of the time have it rented out by the week or day. There is a management company located on the property to handle the details of renting the property for you. The HOA fees cover all utilities, cable and trash removal as well as housekeeping duties.

So check with your real estate agent to see if owning beachfront property is the way to go for you they can advise you of the pros and cons of this.

Vacation Homes

You are dreaming of a exotic vacation on a faraway island but after checking the prices with your travel agent you are getting very discouraged. There is a way to make your dream come true the secret is you have to be flexible. Instead of booking a hotel room you might think about a vacation home. The secret to this is to travel with someone who you trust and enjoy being around so you can't share the expenses.Let us take the island of Fiji for example. A vacation home can be rented on Fiji for as low as $200 a night. Even sharing this expense with one or two other people you have cut your bill in half. Many vacation homes come with all the amenities private pools and maid service is not uncommon. Many vacation homes have three bedrooms and at least two bathroom and are located in safe areas. If you rent the vacation home for at least a week there is generally a discount so you could end up paying between $1000 and $1200 for your complete stay of a week. So check with your travel agent to see if they can get the information on a good vacation home on where you are planning to travel. You could save money and have even a more enjoyable vacation.

To avoid many problems you might want to consider purchasing your dream vacation home or investment property in the USA. Florida in particular has magnificent deals on real estate. You also have the benefit that the real estate transaction will be in English and easy to understand. There are many beautiful and exotic properties for sale in such places as Marco Island Florida, Cape Coral Florida and along the Atlantic coast. So before investing your hard-earned money in another country you might want to contact a reputable real estate agent and find some real bargains right here at home.

The Bogus Cruise

If you have been contacted by mail or even e-mail that you have won a free cruise beware of these offers generally there is no such thing as a free cruise. Many times the people offering this free cruise will tell you it is a promotional ticket offered by the cruise company.

Generally with this scam you will be informed that all you have to do is pay a $99 processing fee. This could actually be a scheme to steal your personal information or sell you a cruise that does not exist. The best way to combat this is just say no.

An easy way not to be ripped off is do not rush in to making a deal. Take the time to verify the offer by calling the cruise line. Pay by credit card never with cash or check this will offer some kind of protection in case this is a bogus offer. Insist on paying the cruise line directly never to a travel agent. Be sure to use a reputable travel agent that has references that can be checked. It's a jungle out there so be careful.

Monster in the deep

The Philippine Islands is a beautiful place known for its sandy white beaches and great scuba diving and swimming.

Can you imagine while taking a relaxing dip in the beautiful Clear water surrounding the Philippines running into this guy! Wow this 21 foot 2000 lb. saltwater crocodile was captured in the southern Philippines alive. It is probably one of the largest crocodiles to be captured alive. It took 100 people to pull the over 2000 pound crocodile from the water to a waiting crane which lifted it into a truck. This crocodile was suspect in the killing of a local fisherman and was also seen attacking and killing a water buffalo. The area that the mammoth crocodile was caught in was similar to our Florida Everglades and not a place where tourists or locals would actually be swimming and enjoying their vacation thank God for that.

They are planning to put the massive croc in ecotourism park where I'm sure it will be the star attraction. The local villagers said they are glad to be rid of this monster but are very leery because there are two more massive croc's lurking in the area. They have been warned to stay away from the marshy areas especially in the evening hours until they can be also caught. I'm definitely glad this is not my job but my hat is off to the brave hunters who protect their villages by capturing these monsters.

Vacation Condo Rental

While planning your vacation you might want to consider renting a vacation condo rather than staying in a hotel room.

Sometimes you will find this less expensive if you are staying for a longer period of time such as two weeks or more. Some condos can be rented on a daily basis but most will be for at least a week or more.

Some of the benefits of renting a condo would be they will have a great location with beautiful views, more space and everything you need will be included in the price. Another money saver most condos have a kitchen and you will save money by not eating out and also by not having to tip on most occasions as if you were staying in a hotel. Many condos will have amenities such as a portable sauna or hot tub, or be located right on the beach. Many condos will offer housekeeping as an option. So while trying to decide what to do on your vacation condo rental verses hotel contact a local travel agent who can explain the various options open to you.

Advantage To Using a Travel Agent

Is there really an advantage to having a travel agent plan your vacation? The answer to this question is yes. A travel agent has access to many different vendors this can save you money because they have the latest information available on sales and promotional deals offered by airlines, cruise line and rental car companies.

What should I expect from my travel agent? A good travel agent can arrange travel either domestic or international. They can assist you in passport and visa applications. A good travel agent is up-to-date on regulations required when traveling to a foreign country.

A good travel agent can actually custom design your vacation. If you prefer smoking or non-smoking areas while traveling such as on airlines or hotel rooms. Making sure your frequent flyer numbers are credited. Scheduled events around your personal interest and address any budget concerns you might have. Many travel agents specialized in certain kinds of travel such as adventure tours, scuba diving or mountain climbing you have many choices. So when planning your vacation save yourself time money and a lot of stress contact a reputable travel agent and let them handle all your travel needs.

Smallest Island

What is the smallest island in the world? Where is it located? Could it be in the Caribbean, Asia or the Middle East. Actually the smallest island is located off the coast of England in what is known as islands of Sicily.

This island is only 50 m² and is uninhabited except for a lighthouse that is the only building on the island which by the way takes up the entire island. There is another island that some people consider the smallest it is located off the coast of India. This island is called isle of Brahmaputra it is a Rock Island approximately 1 km.

Now I'm really going to confusion there is an island in the Philippines off the coast of Mindoro just a few minutes from San Jose, Occidental Mindoro. This island is so small that only four people can be on it at one time. So I leave the choice up to you the UK, India or the Philippines either way I don't think you'll be taken a vacation there.

Your Island

How would you like to own your own private island? If someone asked you this question your answer might be yes that would be great if I was a millionaire. Tramp Steamer

If you're looking for alternatives to a cruise ship you might try a tramp steamer. In days gone by this was an inexpensive way to take an ocean cruise. The modern cruise ship with endless buffets, casinos and never in ending entertainment has put this type of travel in a decline.

If you would like to experience a different type of cruise you might want to try cruising on a freighter. Of course you will not have the amenities that are found on a cruise ship. But you might enjoy seeing the everyday life on a working ship. You will have your own cabin but your meals will be taken with the crew. You will visit different ports of call that you may not experience on a traditional cruise ship. You will definitely have time to reflect on your life or read that book that you never had time to do. So if you're looking for an inexpensive way to travel the world this would be for you.

The Caribbean Coast

Holbox is one of the undiscovered islands on the Mexican Caribbean. It is a beautiful place and left unspoiled by an influx of tourists. It is located on the eastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula.

With beautiful clear green waters and white sand beaches many thousands of Flamingos, pelicans, exotic birds and small sea creatures have made the waters their home. The waters here are usually warm and calm and very shallow making it a great place for swimming with the kids.

There is only one small village located on this island. There are very few cars on the island the main mode of transportation is by golf cart, bicycle or on foot. You can treat yourself to the local delicacy of ceviche. This is a cold dish of fish, shrimp and other shellfish marinated in lime, tomatoes, vinegar, oil and cilantro with a touch of garlic. If you come for a visit or decide to make this your summer home you will truly have found and unspoiled paradise for yourself.

Problems with Sharks

You have found the island of your dreams and are ready to dive into the clear beautiful clear green water. I might caution you before you do this to check and see if there have been any local incidents with sharks remember not all beaches are only playgrounds for humans some could be a hunting grounds for sharks. The white sands of new Smyrna Beach Florida attract many thousands of tourist each year. It also seems to be a favorite vacation spot for sharks. In 2007 it had an increased amount of shark attacks. Out of 112 attacks around the world 17 were on the beach. They were not life-threatening attacks. Went swimming you must be aware of your surroundings for example you find yourself in the middle of a school of small fish commonly known as bait fish leave the water immediately at this is what sharks feed on.One of the most infested beaches in the world is Velzyland beach off the North Shore of Oahu. Hawaii the waters here are filled primarily with Tiger sharks. So before you dive into the crystal-clear waters of your island or favorite beach be sure you have checked with the locals about any shark incidents. And always try to swim where there is a lifeguard these tips may save you from being and appetizer for a hungry shark.

Pitcarn Island

Pitcarn Island you are probably asking yourself where the heck is this place and why does the name sounds so familiar. The reason that this name may sound familiar to you is that this island had some very famous inhabitants at one time.Pitcarn Island is located in the South Pacific and at one time was inhabited by tribes with a Polynesian culture. They mysteriously disappeared in the 1400s. This has just added to the mystery and intrigue of the island.

This island is most remembered because the crew of the Bounty as in Mutiny on the Bounty settled on this island with their Tahitian wives in the 1790s.

After years of isolation from the outside world and American sailing vessel happened to stumble across this island in 1808. The American sailors expected to meet some type of hostile natives of the island but instead were greeted by English-speaking Anglo- Tahitians. Who were the direct descendants of the crew of the Bounty. And that is how the world learned of the story of what happened to the members of the crew.

So if you're looking for a remote place to live where you can forget the everyday stress of life Pitcarin Island would probably be a great choice for you. Because the population of the island only numbers about 50 people who are the direct descendants of the mutineers of the Bounty.

My Favorite TV Episode

Guest post of the week by Ferdinand Livingston:

For many years, my husband and I have watched The Golden Girls television show. We have loved this show from the very beginning when it first aired. Our favorite episode revolves around the three women who live together getting a winning lottery ticket. They are very excited about it and begin planning how they will be spending their share of the money. Unknowingly, the oldest woman who lives in the home, gives the jacket they have hidden the ticket in, to a charity for auction. The jacket gets auctioned off and the winner donates the jacket to a local homeless shelter. The women pretend to be homeless so that they can search for the jacket. After spending a night in the shelter, they find that they can no longer use the ticket for their own selfish needs but decide to donate it to the shelter instead.

We love this episode, but, we also enjoy all of the other shows in this series. It is a hilarious show which tries to show the viewers what it would be like if women from different backgrounds decided to live together in later life. We always watch this show on our wWw.satellite911.COM and we enjoy it very much. The show is now playing in reruns and we can watch it any time we want to. We plan on watching for a long time.

Be Aware of your Surroundings

I enjoy traveling and writing about different exotic places in the world especially islands. I think while traveling to these faraway places you must really be aware of your surroundings and always on guard.

On Sunday while reading my paper I came across an article about to French tourist both of them women brutally murdered in Salta, Argentina my sympathies and condolences go out to the victims and their families. These two young women in their 30s were hiking in the mountains and enjoying the beauty of Argentina. But you have to remember there are always monsters out there waiting for their opportunity to strike. That is why you must be aware of your surroundings when visiting some of these third world countries like traveling in groups or with male counterparts. So my friends don't be afraid to travel the world and visited exotic place just be careful and keep one eye open at all-times.

Ship Island

If you're traveling along the Mississippi Gulf Coast there is a offshore island that you might want to visit it is rich in cultural and heritage. I am talking about Ship Island located approximately 12 miles off the coast of Gulfport,Mississippi. Unless you have your own boat the only way to reach the island is to take a ferry from a company called Ship Island Excursions they are an official Park service concession.Five flags have flown over Ship Island the French, British, Spanish, Confederate and Union. Fort Massachusetts is also on ship Island it was built by the federal government but was later burned down by the Confederate Army who later rebuilt it but soon abandoned it.The fort itself received very little damage from Hurricane Katrina but the restored lighthouse was completely destroyed along with the island's Pier and boardwalk most of the concession and sleeping quarters for the park rangers were also destroyed during the storm but have all been rebuilt back now. There are many interesting things to see as you wander around the island it is a great detour off the beaten path and a unique experience I'm sure you will enjoy.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is often referred to as the lost city of the Incas. Although known locally the lost city was unknown to the outside world tell around 1911. Since this time Machu Picchu has become a very important and popular tourist attraction for Peru. Most of the site has been reconstructed in order to give tourists a better idea of what it might have looked like. In 2007 the site was voted one of the new seven wonders of the world in a worldwide Internet poll.

The Spanish were unaware of Machu Picchu during their conquest. So it is really an intact culture site. Machu Picchu was built in typical Inca style. It's three Main building are Intihuatana, Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Window these the building are located in what is known as the Sacred District. Machu Picchu is 7973 feet of both sea level where the air is quite thin. When you visit you must be aware of this in case you have any problems such as shortness of breath also there is quite a bit of walking involved as you must climb many steps. I know this article is off my beaten path as I usually discuss different islands of the world but I thought you might like a change. So if you are looking for a total new and different part of the world to explore try Machu Piccu located in Peru.
